Hey everyone! I’m back and here to review a new application for Snow Leopard and Lion. DesktopShelves is an application by KiteStack Software. The function of DesktopShelves is interesting. The application create shelves on your desktop where you can put the maximum of 5 icons, each holding 20 files. DesktopShelves costs $14.99 on the Mac App Store or you can download a free 14-day demo on their website. Read on for further information and application features.
To start off, you can drag and drop files from your computer desktop and a finder window on the shelves. Once these files are on the shelves, you can rearrange and drag the files out from the shelves into other apps or finder windows. An interesting feature is finder integration, which allows you to right click on any folder in Finder and click “open as shelf on desktop”. This option does exactly what you think. In the “text snippet” feature, you can right click and drag a file away from a shelf to paste the text contents. You can also do the exact opposite of the previous feature, meaning you can highlight text from an application like Safari and drop it on the desktop shelf, creating a new folder. The shelves all these files and folders sit on are customizable. You can use the default shelves KiteStack Software gives you in the application, or you can download shelves from their design gallery or DeviantArt (I love the three PSD docks in this pack by omercetin on deviantArt), among others. Last, but not least, you can assign hotkeys to DesktopShelves so no matter what you are viewing or what application is open, you can always find your desktop shelf.
DesktopShelves is a smart, easy way to clean up your desktop. It is visually appealing, which never hurts. In my book, it is a five out of five stars because of its helpfulness and look. If you don’t believe me, go download the free 14-day trial or just go and by it from the App Store. I’d like to thank KiteStack for the pictures above, which can be found on their website. This application is somewhat expensive, so we would like to try and set up a giveaway with KiteStack Software. Who knows, you may be using this application in a week or two!
