Hey guys! How’s everything going with you all? Sorry I’ve been absent for so long, but I’m back now and I have an old application that if you don’t already have, is a must download. Caffeine, developed by Lighthead Software, is a simple application that sits in your menubar.
Caffeine really has one main function: to keep your Mac awake by preventing your screen from dimming, starting your screensaver, and putting your Mac to sleep. To prevent your Mac from falling asleep, all you have to do is click the menubar icon (be aware that the menubar icon in the picture above is not the default, you can find this specific one in the “Clean” pack by Oscar Palmer). When the coffee cup icon is empty it means the application is off and your computer will fall asleep. When it is full, the opposite is true. Simple. When you right click the coffee cup, you can go to the Caffeine preferences and set Caffeine to be activated for a certain amount of time (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15, 30, 1 hour, 2, or 5 hours). In the preferences window that pops up, you can choose to automatically start Caffeine at login.
So some may ask, why would you want to prevent your computer from falling asleep if there are benefits, like saving battery power? Yes, when you computer is asleep, you use less battery, but you can always put your computer to sleep manually by shutting you laptop lid or going to the apple logo in the left corner and clicking the sleep option. However, when I download files, some of them happen to be large files and take a long time to fully download. If my computer falls asleep, then those files will timeout. And then some of you may ask, if you are at your computer already then why don’t you just move the mouse to prevent it from falling asleep? That works too, but sometimes I’ll download the file and then leave my computer, making me unable to move the mouse and keep my computer awake. So, the short way of saying that whole paragraph is that when you are away from your computer but you need to keep it on, Caffeine can help you with that.
Caffeine is available for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and up, making almost anyone able to download it. The application is free and can be downloaded directly from the Lighthead Software website or on the Mac App Store for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and 10. 7 Lion.
